At the annual Spring Student Awards for the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems, Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) student Azib Zahid earned the James G. Williams Award. Named after Distinguished Professor Emeritus James G. Williams, the scholarship is awarded to outstanding MSIS students.

Zahid’s studies had a specialized focus in Big Data Analytics, and he is passionate about analyzing data to create innovative, tech-driven solutions with real-world impacts. Zahid has gained multifaceted knowledge in the MSIS program at SCI.

“The MSIS program at Pitt SCI has a strong curriculum that integrates both theoretical and practical aspects of information science. The program’s focus on emerging technologies and its reputation for producing industry-ready graduates were key factors in my decision to attend,” said Zahid.

An important part in Zahid’s academic and professional development was collaborating with renown faculty and peers in the program.

“Working alongside peers and faculty from diverse backgrounds has enriched my understanding and approach to problem-solving in information science,” said Zahid.

Zahid plans to pursue a career as a software engineer with a focus on big data analytics after graduation.

“I am fascinated by the power of data to influence business strategies and decision-making processes. Working in this area will allow me to apply my technical skills in software development and data processing to solve complex problems and derive actionable insights from large datasets. I believe this focus not only aligns with my academic background, but also with my career aspirations to impact the tech industry by enhancing data-driven decisions,” said Zahid. “The MSIS program not only equips students with deep technical skills but also fosters critical thinking and problem-solving abilities that are crucial in the ever-evolving field of information science.”
