Students in the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program have countless opportunities to showcase their skills and knowledge of librarianship and information science, and Scylla Humbert is one example. Humbert received a travel award from the Society of American Archivists (SAA) to attend the SAA Annual Meeting, which took place from Aug. 15-17, 2024, in Chicago, IL.
“The SAA Annual Meeting is a major conference in the archives profession, bringing together students, scholars, and practitioners,” said Chelsea Gunn, teaching assistant professor in the Department of Information Culture and Data Stewardship (ICDS). “It’s a great opportunity to learn more about current and emerging work in the field.”
The conference is a prestigious opportunity for students and professionals to network, build their expertise in the field, and showcase their work. Thousands of people from across the country attend to connect with others in the library and information science fields.
“I’m delighted that Scylla received this travel award to support her attendance,” said Gunn. “Students from MLIS programs around the country apply for these awards, and the fact that she received one is a testament to the quality of her work and her engagement in the field beyond the classroom.”
During the conference, attendees participated in both in-person and virtual meetings. Events included educational sessions, panels, forums, workshops, and networking. Attendees gain valuable knowledge of opportunities in the field, different workplace environments, and a sense of the large community of archivists.
“During the conference, I was surrounded by like-minded people in the archival profession, and I was able to take in just how many directions I could go in studying libraries and archives,” said Humbert. “Being able to network with fellow graduate students at their poster sessions and attend panels on the future of the field made me feel like I was a part of something larger than myself.”
The conference is a transformative experience for archivists in their careers, and travel awards like the one awarded to Humbert make it possible for many to attend.
“I feel very grateful for the experience that the SAA travel award gave me,” said Humbert. “I wouldn’t have been able to attend without it covering my travel and lodging expenses. Attending the SAA Annual Meeting in Chicago was an incredible opportunity for me as a master’s student!”
