SCI Commemorates Graduates in Fall 2023 Recognition Ceremony

December 20, 2023

The School of Computing and Information (SCI) hosted its Fall 2023 Recognition Ceremony on Dec. 16. Nearly 70 graduates and their loved ones gathered in Lawrence Hall to commemorate the students’ achievements. The evening was a celebration of students’ dedication, commitment, and hard work during their time at the University of Pittsburgh.

Adam Lee, executive associate dean and professor at SCI, commenced the ceremony by greeting the attendees and highlighting the graduates’ achievements.

“Through your time at SCI and your engagements with these world-class professionals, you’ve gained comprehensive knowledge of the interacting systems that power our world, engaged in research that pushes boundaries, and helped each other grow along the way—all while finding new ways to learn and grow that few of you would have anticipated when you began as students here,” said Lee. “I am eager to see how your contributions transform the world of work and our society!”

Denise Callihan, alumna of SCI’s Master of Library and Information Science program and member of SCI’s Alumni Board, then addressed the graduates. “Not only did you get an exceptional education, but you also get us, a network of fellow graduates as your superhero allies, ready to guide and support you in your endeavors,” Callihan remarked.

Lee along with program chairs and department leaders Mary Kay Biagini, Daqing He, Leona Mitchell, Daniel Mossé, and John Ramirez presented the graduates. Callihan welcomed the graduates as SCI alumni.

“Congratulations graduates! You now find yourselves amongst the ranks of approximately 20,000 School of Computing and Information-affiliated alumni from across the country and around the globe,” said Callihan. “We hope the next few years will bring many exciting changes to your personal and professional lives, but we also hope you will remain connected to your home away from home, SCI!”

Lee concluded the ceremony by congratulating the graduates and thanking family, friends, faculty, and staff.

“Thank you for taking the time to celebrate your graduates and their achievements with us, and we wish you the best in what we hope will be a very promising future!”
