Dr. Peter Brusilovsky and team awarded $1M for AI Research from NSF

January 15. 2025

Dr. Peter Brusilovsky and his team at the University of Pittsburgh have achieved a significant milestone by securing their second major grant this fall, fostering collaboration between researchers in the United States and Finland on artificial intelligence research. The total two side funding calculates to over $1 million. The joint venture is mutually funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) on the U.S front, and RCF on the Finnish front. The award aligns with the NSF’s mission and therefore has received support based on the Foundation’s intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.

This Pitt based team will coordinate with UC Berkeley, North Carolina State University (NCSU), and Aalto University in Finland, to integrate new personalization approaches for computer science education, by employing large language models (LLM’s). Inspiration stemmed from the recent wide availability of LLM’s in education. The key aspect that is actively being accentuated is how to tailor conversations towards maximized alignment with user preferences for optimized task completion.

These implementations and research into this tool will benefit thousands of students at different levels, improving their programming knowledge and skills.

Please join us in congratulating these faculty members on this achievement! Read more about this project here.
