Types of Opportunities

Service-Learning and Community Engagement

The School of Computing and Information has established several key partnerships to assist students in utilizing their technical skills, while making an impact to society. Locally, students are matched with organizations in need of technical assistance in the iServe program offered in conjunction with the Office of PittServes, as well as providing community driven programming and expertise to the Community Engagement Centers located in the Hill District and Homewood. Internationally, they complete technical skills-based service-learning projects in Ecuador during alternative spring break, with other locations being scouted for future breaks.

Internships and Practicum

Internships (and practicum at the graduate level) not only provide students with a hands-on opportunity to learn, but a way for them to build valuable industry connections. The experience can also boost their chances of landing an opportunity after graduation according to a recent study conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. In some instances, students can receive credit for the experience as well.

Cooperative Education

For students looking for a more immersive industry experience, electing to do a co-op can be a great alternative to an internship or practicum. Co-op rotations involve one or two semesters of full-time work, alternating with taking courses. While co-op typically delays graduation by a semester, students have close to a year’s worth of work experience, which can make them very competitive applicants upon graduation.

Research

The University of Pittsburgh is a great place to do research - whether it’s through the School of Computing and Information, the university, or externally, it can be a rewarding experience that has an impact on future generations. Learn more about the research being done in SCI here.

Field Work

While not required of MLIS students, field work can be a great way to build experience and meaningful connections within a student’s intended setting. For more information, please click here

Study Abroad

In addition to alternative spring break, SCI students can participate in a variety of study abroad programs offered through the Global Hub and the Global Experience Office at the university.

Additional Opportunities

The school also hosts hackathons and competitions, as well as site visits, industry-based projects, and more. There is no shortage of ways students can be involved outside of the classroom and the impact can be felt for years to come.
